So you want to learn to play the harp
Playing the harp has many rewards such as its beautiful sound. This is why it is a great instrument for beginners. Learning to play the harp is no different than learning any other instrument. All it takes is a desire to learn and a commitment to practice.
There is much to consider when you decide you want to begin taking harp lessons.
- First, you will need to find a practice instrument. There are several resources for aquiring an instrument. The teacher may have an instrument to start you with. If not, there are a few resources locally but their web sites that can be very helpful as well. We suggest that you surf the internet a little so that you can become a little knowledgeable about the harps. You don't have to be an expert to talk to a teacher but this way you will be less overwhelmed when having your initial conversation with the teacher. Some helpful web sites are
Before making a sizeable financial commitment in purchasing a harp, we recommend that you rent a lever harp to see if playing the harp will be an enjoyable experience leading to a long-term commitment.
- Second, find a teacher that is compatible for you or your child. Some questions you might ask are:
Is the teacher taking any new students?
Where is the harp studio located?
How long and how frequent are the private lessons?
What are the fees and how are the payments structured?
What are the studio policies?
Will the teacher assist you in finding a practice harp?
Does the teacher teach younger children?
Does the teacher teach adults?
At what age does the teacher require a child to be?
Does the student need piano reading skills to play the harp?
